Jack’s Pick

Killington MountainKillington has always set the bar high for skiing and snowboarding experiences…earliest openings (pre-Halloween many years), late closings (remember June 1st slaloms?), fast cruisers to warm up on (Skylark, Wildfire, Needles Eye), challenging steeps and bumps to wear yourself out on, (Outer Limits, Ovation, Double Dipper), glades to get away from the crowds (locations kept in confidence). 22 lifts, 140 trails, 3,050 feet of vertical. It’s a great midweek treat, it’s an easy day trip from Saratoga Springs with friends.

willardWhen I am looking for some winter fun close to home, I head to Willard Mountain.  It’s a great family area just outside of Saratoga Springs.  It had a tubing park, snowmaking, and be sure to look for Chic in the snow cat, grooming away! It’s a fun place to go with friends for a night of skiing followed by a visit to the Thirst Aid Room restaurant and lounge.  Be sure to try some of Willard’s famous chili!

Okemo MountainOkemo Mountain in Ludlow, VT has always been a favorite for our bus trip travelers, and it is definitely one of mine! The terrain around the mountain has everything for the beginner to the expert. Traversing the mountain you experience a huge variety from rolling slopes, bump runs, glades, parks and terrifically groomed conditions. On the South side of the mountain Triple Sec is narrower with a good pitch, Forrest Bump is challenging bump riding or skiing in the trees. Moving over to the newer development on the mountain, Jackson Gore offers a steeper pitch and the never-ending bump trail, Big Bang. Play hard and enjoy a delicious lunch at Epic Lounge to make it feel like a real getaway.

Bromley MountainBromley Mountain in Southern Vermont is my choice for a vacation day of skiing. The gentle and picturesque drive from Saratoga Springs through Shushan prepares me for a beautiful day on the snowy slopes. And usually Bromley lives up to its reputation as the Sun Mountain…and life is good.

Stratton MountainStratton is my go-to place for a great day of skiing. The trails are always well groomed with a variety of wide open cruisers, terrain parks and plenty of steeps if you’re looking for challenge. At the end of the day there are fun shops and restaurants in the village or Manchester Center a few miles away. Stratton is the perfect place to make wonderful winter memories.

Gore MountainGore Mountain offers a wide variety of terrain, and in my opinion some of the best tree skiing on the east coast. They have many family friendly runs on the lower mountain, along with easier, more open glades. At the summit you get steeper terrain, including the Rumor and Lies, to give even the best skiers a challenge. You will find many locals playing on the Dark Side trying to get away from the weekend buzz of the main mountain. Gore has been expanding a lot in the past few years with new terrain on Burnt Ridge and the Ski Bowl, making it a challenge to ski every corner of the mountain in one day.
